I was recently digging through old shoots and stumbled on this one. I met this girl 1 time in a sort of friend of a friend of a friend scenario. This may have been one of the first shoots that really made me appreciate a solid black background. There’s something I find incredibly interesting about completely eliminating the surroundings even though you know it’s there. It doesn’t have the same feel as cutting out a person and painting the background black. Not sure I’m making a lot of sense, but all blathering aside I give you Black Kat.

Redefining Paradise

Usually the term “paradise” is connected to some tropical beach. After my recent trip to Norwich Kansas, I say you rethink what paradise really may be. Admittedly, I never thought of it as paradise until I was there a few days ago. Obviously the perfect getaway is going to vary from person to person. My version is getting out of the city. Getting into the country, breathing the air and takin’ it easy really makes me relax.
I wish I could take everyone there for a week. Walk through some fields, relax on a hill, get our shoes dusty and feel the breeze. This is my biggest blog yet, so sit back and let me take you on a little trip to my paradise.
Sunset Glow & Studio

Ever since I began taking photos, I’ve been more observant of what things might make a good shot. For the past few years, whenever I’m driving and the sun is fairly close to the horizon, I realized the colors were fantastic. I know sunsets can be a bit cliche, but they paint everything warm colors, and when that hits your eyes, it just looks amazing. Next time you’re outside during a sunset, point your face towards the sun and look in a mirror.

Sometimes It’s The Post-Process

Being a photographer requires a few different skills to come up with quality images. You need to start with a good eye for composition and a general sense of setting. Having a good angle and good lighting are crucial first steps, but sometimes it’s just not enough.
Developing skills in editing your shots is what really brings out the shine. Sometimes, if the lighting wasn’t quite right, you have to rely on post-processing to salvage the shoot. My latest shoot suffered from unexpected weather and lighting problems, but in the end I really liked the outcome.
*Also as a side note, I try to avoid vignetting because it’s overdone. Some of these shots include natural vignetting caused by lighting, and some I added a little. You probably couldn’t easily guess which had some added because this is the perfect setting to use vignetting.
