Extreme Honesty

0

Over the past few years I’ve come across some seriously fantastic portrait photography. For a while I tried to figure out how to create the “epic face” look. This look is one of extreme honesty. No detail of the face goes undiscovered. Every little wrinkle, sunspot, hair and even pore is brought to the viewer. Back then I thought it took several steps in Photoshop and a couple hours per edit. After accidentally stumbling upon some things, I discovered a relatively simple way to make highly dynamic portraits. These shots give a sense of deep emotion. They portray an image of a long life, full of experience and ready to tell a story.

I know I said the last post was one of my favorites, but this one is pretty high up there too.

Note to photographers: I don’t use Photoshop often. Rarely in fact. If you’re not using Lightroom, you’re doing it wrong.

The Brothers

1

Ever since I bought my lighting setup, I’ve tended to leave them in my car trunk. The reason for this is because I’m never really sure when I’ll need good lighting. An example of this was recently when hanging out at a friends house. His brother was there and we decided to put the new camera to use. This shoot, like all others I guess, has some interesting aspects. These brothers have, in ways, opposite professions. One is trained to kill, and the other trained to heal. I’ll let you guess which is which.

Also this is the first time I’ve posted completely unedited photos. These are straight from the camera. Enjoy.

Paint Her Black

I’ve had the opportunity to work with Gia Black on several occasions. Each time is a little different than the last and she always brings new ideas to the table. Also I appreciate working with someone who is a professional makeup artist. She’s also a very fun person to shoot with. Sometimes we disagree on the best shots, but in the end there’s always a collection of great looking photos.

Just Have Fun

Here is the other half of my beach strobist shoot. I managed to get very few good shots of the other model. Either she wasn’t looking my way, or was in the middle of moving. Mostly I just didn’t hop in and grab her attention. So I managed to find a few that I liked, but they didn’t have the “zazz” like the previous post. There were a couple points during the shoot that I stopped and looked for something else to photograph. I even decided to take some shots of the assistant guy and just had some fun with the editing.

I don’t often do stylized editing like you’ll see in this post, but I really like the results, so who knows. Anyway, the moral of the story is sometimes you don’t get the look you’re going for, so you just gotta have some fun.

Oh, and I figured since I was by the Skyway bridge I would take a shot right? So the old bridge, now a fishing pier, costs like $8.52 or so to access. I don’t remember the exact amount, but it required pennies. Very weird. Also it’s hard to take a shot of the bridge at night considering how windy it is.

Bikini Beach Group Shoot

This is a truly unique photo blog. A few weeks ago I happened to stumble upon an ad somewhere on the internet. It was for a group shoot with multiple models on the beach. The shoot took place on a small nature preserve down by the Sunshine Skyway bridge. Well as I’ve known for a while, models can be flaky. Only a couple showed up vs. the 6 or so photographers. It was a bit of a challenge to get the shot, but overall I met some cool fellow photographers and managed to walk away with some good stuff.

As always, throw me a comment, insult, or some other kind of feedback if you feel so inclined.
