Extreme Honesty
0Over the past few years I’ve come across some seriously fantastic portrait photography. For a while I tried to figure out how to create the “epic face” look. This look is one of extreme honesty. No detail of the face goes undiscovered. Every little wrinkle, sunspot, hair and even pore is brought to the viewer. Back then I thought it took several steps in Photoshop and a couple hours per edit. After accidentally stumbling upon some things, I discovered a relatively simple way to make highly dynamic portraits. These shots give a sense of deep emotion. They portray an image of a long life, full of experience and ready to tell a story.
I know I said the last post was one of my favorites, but this one is pretty high up there too.
Note to photographers: I don’t use Photoshop often. Rarely in fact. If you’re not using Lightroom, you’re doing it wrong.
Bioshocking: The Process
0In the past I’ve spoken about certain shoots requiring a lot of post-processing. I haven’t ever actually explained what kind of editing I do to my images, mainly because I didn’t think people care. Also I run the risk of losing some of the intrigue of the image. This is sort of like a magician explaining his tricks – you’d probably rather not even know.
But the Bioshock shoot was a horse of a different color. It’s pretty obvious that each image got its own special treatment. If you look at the image captions, I explain in a little detail what I did to make it different from the original.
The Brothers
1Ever since I bought my lighting setup, I’ve tended to leave them in my car trunk. The reason for this is because I’m never really sure when I’ll need good lighting. An example of this was recently when hanging out at a friends house. His brother was there and we decided to put the new camera to use. This shoot, like all others I guess, has some interesting aspects. These brothers have, in ways, opposite professions. One is trained to kill, and the other trained to heal. I’ll let you guess which is which.
Also this is the first time I’ve posted completely unedited photos. These are straight from the camera. Enjoy.
A New Day
0It’s a new day for me and this site as a whole. For a while I’ve been denying myself a better camera because I wanted to avoid thinking I could create better images just by upgrading my gear. Until recently I believed I hadn’t reached the limit of the camera I was using. Finally I decided to pull the trigger on the Nikon D7000. It’s going to be interesting to see how I can push this new camera. I went out this evening to a parking garage I’ve been looking at for a while to capture a great Florida sunset. If you like my work, hopefully you’ll like this new stuff even more.
Fairly Interesting
0So it’s that time of year again. I went to the fair with some friends and of course took some photos. My inspiration has really been lacking lately, so I only took a few shots while I was there. While I haven’t been having much inspiration for shooting, I have been looking into some different things to make my work more interesting that only photoshop can accomplish. The work done on these should be somewhat subtle, but I’m just starting down a long road of true post-processing. Things will get interesting.
In other news, I’m buying a new camera soon. More to come on that later.
