Tampa Time

Well, if you’ve come to know anything about my photographic style, let it be that I like shooting cityscapes. Something about large scale man-made objects are pretty impressive to me. Buildings are an interesting subject. Usually smaller buildings are given less detail to design and beauty. If you go to your local gas station or fast food joint it’s probably just a big box with the insides set up for utility. Larger buildings, especially those showcased in the downtown area, are given a bit more aesthetic. Anyway, here’s a few more buildings. I styled some differently. I would probably be doing an aged 70′s look before now if it wasn’t for Instagram. It’s an interesting style to manufacture, but harder to do it when millions of people have the app for instant nostalgia.

The Baby Portrait

A few months ago I did my first wedding shoot, which is something I held off doing for a long time. The other photography style I was holding off on was the baby portrait. I tried to do take some shots of my nephew when he was a month or so old, but that just solidified my stance against baby photography. I just didn’t think I had the magic or styling that’s needed to match the quality I’ve seen in other photographers.

Well, some good friends had a baby and I gave it another go. This is Stella, and she made me think baby portraits aren’t so bad. She also attempted to eat some grass which was perhaps the funniest thing I’ve ever seen.

Self Portraits

Ever since I started taking pictures, it was inevitable that I would occasionally become the subject matter. Usually it was testing a technique or someone else controlling the camera. This isn’t to say I’m camera shy, but I just don’t point it at myself as often as I do everything else. Anyway, I went through my old archives and dug up some pictures of myself. Most of them haven’t been seen before, or some that have been seen I edited them in a completely different way. This will likely be my only self-portrait post, but it was interesting going through the process. It’s strange looking at pictures of yourself for a while. It starts to seem like you’re looking at a different person.

So this is my self-portrait selection. My brain works in weird ways, so I tried to make these reflect that.

Fly By Night

After a time of photo-for-hire work, I’ve finally gotten back into photo-for-leisure. For the longest time I wondered what would be the ramifications of perching atop the parking garage at Tampa International Airport and taking photos. I figured I would be all alone up there, looking like some kind of terrorist suspect. Well I finally found out by just going up there. Turns out people like to hang out on the top floor of the airport parking garage.

Well anyway, it was pretty windy up there but how could I resist the city atmosphere at night? I never turn down city/night shooting. Here’s my take on TPA.

Paradise 2

If you remember my original post “Welcome to Paradise”, you remember a beautiful little town in the Midwest. Well, I went back recently but with a different purpose. This time, and for the first time on this site, I decided to make a video. I’m not about to think of myself as some kind of movie production master, but I wanted to give it a shot. Making movies is something I enjoy and will probably do more in the future. I took a few photos while I was there, including YET ANOTHER attempt at astro photo. The result was slightly better, but still not what I’m looking for. Someday…

The Wedding

A few weeks ago I was given an opportunity that isn’t very easy to receive. A friend of mine (who was featured in the Bioshock post as Big Daddy) was getting married and asked me to shoot it. This was somewhat of a risk on their part, as I had never shot a wedding before. To trust someone who has no prior wedding photography experience is a big deal, and I didn’t take it lightly.

At any rate, it was a great wedding on a beautiful day. They’re sort of goofy, which made my job only better. Take a look and enjoy.

Extreme Honesty

Over the past few years I’ve come across some seriously fantastic portrait photography. For a while I tried to figure out how to create the “epic face” look. This look is one of extreme honesty. No detail of the face goes undiscovered. Every little wrinkle, sunspot, hair and even pore is brought to the viewer. Back then I thought it took several steps in Photoshop and a couple hours per edit. After accidentally stumbling upon some things, I discovered a relatively simple way to make highly dynamic portraits. These shots give a sense of deep emotion. They portray an image of a long life, full of experience and ready to tell a story.

I know I said the last post was one of my favorites, but this one is pretty high up there too.

Note to photographers: I don’t use Photoshop often. Rarely in fact. If you’re not using Lightroom, you’re doing it wrong.

Dream in White

It’s been about a month and a half since my last post, but I think this makes up for it. Sometimes I have a vision of a certain look I want to go for, and then decide who I want to work with to accomplish it. My vision for this shoot was white. White clothing on a white background; very clean and bright.

Back in March I shot a friend on the beach who I thought had a lot of potential. It was her first photoshoot and I put her out in front of the beach crowd. That shoot turned out a few nice shots, but ultimately it served to give her a little experience with posing and getting over the awkwardness. I thought the red hair and sexy personality would be the perfect match for this shoot. I ended up being right, but I had no idea how much I would love this set until I opened it up and began post-processing.

All my shoots have their own unique characteristics, but this one stands out to me as one of the best.

Party to the Floor

I recently hit up a birthday party for the glorious Rhianna. This party had fireworks, black lights, strobe lights, trick candles, people passing out, loud music, and somehow managed to avoid police intervention. I certainly had an interesting time of my own, but that’s a story for another day. Here are some pictures from the party.

Bioshocking: The Process

In the past I’ve spoken about certain shoots requiring a lot of post-processing. I haven’t ever actually explained what kind of editing I do to my images, mainly because I didn’t think people care. Also I run the risk of losing some of the intrigue of the image. This is sort of like a magician explaining his tricks – you’d probably rather not even know.

But the Bioshock shoot was a horse of a different color. It’s pretty obvious that each image got its own special treatment. If you look at the image captions, I explain in a little detail what I did to make it different from the original.
