Norwich Kansas, Part II

I recently had a chance to head back to Norwich Kansas to visit family. This is part 2. Part one was titled Welcome to Paradise, which many people saw in the previous version of this site. You can check those out on the travel photos section of the site. I went up there with only one expectation: introducing my fiancée to my family in that area.

I had no idea, until we arrived, that I would be photographing classic cars, a windfarm, and family. As always, I keep my descriptions brief. enjoy.

Why I Keep My RAW Files

One of the problems most photographers face is the buildup of files. Generally a photographer will shoot in RAW mode, if not RAW+JPEG basic. Each time you go out shooting you’ll end up with anywhere from100-1000 shots. RAW files tend to be at least 10mb in size, so it adds up pretty quickly.

A few months ago, before I got my new PC, I ran into this problem. I was constantly deleting files and filling back up quickly. I went through all my RAW files and deleted several shoot. I chose not to delete all my RAWs, thinking maybe I would revisit certain (more important) shoots to re-edit them.

I got some negative feedback on my wedding photography and it motivated me to go back and edit it with my current style, which is vastly different. I used to push for very bright bold colors, but recently I’ve moved more towards a more subdued and impactful approach.

The Black Dragon

I was recently asked to shoot a friend/mentor/colleague, Greg (aka The Black Dragon). I welcomed the opportunity to exercise my new outdoor portrait style. This particular shoot presented a couple of challenges. Until recently I was intimidated by overcast weather when shooting outdoors. I came to realize that it can add a nice dynamic feel to outdoor shooting.

The other challenges in this shoot came down to skin. First off, it was unfortunately warm that day. The weather had been room temperature for weeks, until this day. It wasn’t outlandishly hot, but it was hot enough to sweat. I tried to tone down the shiny aspects. The last challenge was shooting a dark skin tone. Without proper lighting, darker skin tone features will get lost. Having a strobe and softbox easily solved this problem.

Florida State Fair 2013

As is tradition, I went to the Florida State fair yet again. I don’t think I took any photos last year, and only a couple the year before that. It’s a problem I seem to have a lot there. I focus more on having fun and finding weird, delicious eats that I don’t really look for interesting opportunities. This year I ran into a few occasions that needed to be captured (and I managed to get my camera out before it was too late).

First Engagement

While I don’t often post photos of myself, I had to make an exception this once. I recently proposed to my girlfriend. The original idea was to set up a camera to take pictures during the proposal with a 5 second interval. Well I did that, but they didn’t look all that great.

We went out to some random wildlife area and snapped a few shots that came out pretty well.

Competition Against Nobody

About a week ago I became aware of a photo competition at reddit.com/r/photography. I had intentions of taking a couple new shots, but had difficulty finding time throughout that weekend to take them. Lack of time and cloudy weather made me push it back until Monday night. It was still overcast and windy, but I decided to do it anyway. As it turns out, the weather just enhanced these shots more than I would have guessed. The lightened sky changed the whole picture to give a sort of silver moody look.

I’m pleased with the outcome of these shots, but I missed the competition deadline. Oh well, guess there’s always next time.

A Day By The Bay

I recently went down to Jackson’s Bistro with some friends. Besides a decent spread for brunch, they also have a decent view of many iconic Tampa buildings. My goal that day was to take a couple photos of friends that were good enough for my standards, capture some shots of the area, and see what else I could see. Here’s some of the results, featuring a daredevil stunt and a very sad seagull.

Lost at Sea

This past weekend I went out on a dolphin sightseeing tour. Being who I am, dolphins were really the smaller part of the adventure. I enjoyed some quality time with the lady, and mostly just enjoyed the boat ride. Once I had my camera out, I realized I was surrounded by all sorts of photographic opportunities. From the child gripped with fear to the man wearing a shirt with 2 lions and an X-Files jacket, I was surrounded by interesting people.

Tiffany, Sinatra and a New Day

Every once in a while I come to the conclusion that I can take better photographs. Sometimes this means buying a new camera, sometimes it means upgrading my gear, and often it means using my current gear in a different way. This time it was the less expensive route of realizing I had the gear to improve my work. By simply combining a piece from my studio lighting set with my Nissin i866 flash I got the results I’ve been wanting.

This is the first look at the new style of shots for this site. I’m becoming far more active in controlling my lighting, and the payoff is immediate. Enjoy these few shots of Tiffany and her amazing dog Sinatra.

Bar Mitzvah

My most recent shoot was a first time experience for me. I was referred to shoot a Bar Mitzvah, and I was happy to have such an opportunity. I’m not Jewish, so being involved with that culture has been quite a rarity for me. In addition to seeing a sacred religious occasion, I also had to adhere to limitations as a photographer. Certain instances are simply off limits to a photographer snapping away, distracting everyone involved.

Aside from the technical challenges, this shoot was an experience I won’t soon forget.
